War of the Worlds

January 17, 2009

The frequency with which the word ‘war’ has been mentioned in the recent past has got me worried. In the last month, the Indo-Pak war rhetoric reached fever pitch, Israel invaded the Gaza strip (they never left in the first place), Sri Lanka made an unprecedented attack on the LTTE, driving them out of the country. But it was Israel’s action that were the most shocking.

1193 have died in the past 19 days, including 410 children and 108 women. 5300 are wounded. Many hospitals, two UN schools, and one UN warehouse have been brought down to rubble. That is in addition to around $1.4 billion of damage caused to the already poor infrastructure in the controversial stretch of land.

The bombing is uninterrupted. There are no windows of ceasefire for the victims to be hospitalized or treated. And mind you, if it was causing damage to Hamas, it would have been called progress from the Israeli point of view. But the percentage of civilian deaths is tremendously high. Such mindless bombing against unarmed civilians is not going to drive the Hamas away. On the contrary it is going to raise the levels of hatred and resentment amongst the Palestinians. Hamas might get the impetus it just needs.

While the Western media (EU and American) had always shown its prejudices against Palestinian cause, the level of damage is so alarming that they too are taking a more practical stand in support of the ceasefire. The world has come together in opposing the mindless atrocity but Israel has remain obstinate in its stand. The game of victimization has been played by both sides, but this time, the Palestinians are certainly not wrong.

Seriously, what’s wrong with the world? War is never a solution, but it is an easier way out. Who are we killing? Terrorists? Militants? They are the effect of an ideology which needs to change. Till then, more will come, like an army that doesn’t feel pain.

It was a question of choice. India chose to wait and watch. Sri Lanka struck surgically, gradually cornering all the Tamil Tigers till they were pushed out. Israel chose bloodshed of innocent lives, now the question is how will they solve the bigger problem they have created?

But don’t you think that either way, innocent people are being killed? Even when India is waiting and watching, people are still dying.

May be. A lot can happen over ifs and buts. But surely we are not at peace. A war world in a world with nuclear weapons will be apocalyptic.

Agreed. Many nations are at war, either with other countries, or with forces inside their borders.

But is it worth letting many more die for a cause that might not even reap the wanted results? The debt of one’s lives can not be paid through the worth of many others. Even my first reaction was we must nuke Pak. It will all be over, but sense must prevail over impulse.

All around the WORLD there are double standards. In 1991, when Iraq invaded whole world were cried and international troops were send to fight the war. When gaza was nobody was intend to send troops to protect the people of gaza. America would have jumped up and down, if India attacked Pakistan. Why the same concern was not given to gaza? because by supporting the cause of them, they are not going to get anything. I dont know how you are saying that in Srilanka surgical strikes are going on. If thats what happening there, why they are resisting in allowing the international news agencies. What really happening there was mass killing of Tamil people. Until now we didnt got the exact no. of people were killed there. Until now they didnt announced about the reliefs being given to the people in war affected region. World will not stop this also. Because there is no good for them. America supporting Israel to keep the middle east in their control. they are supporting Pakistan to keep Afghanistan in their control.
