85 Is Not So Bad, Is It?

September 24, 2008

India is a rich country, no doubt. People have money. People spend money. The standard of living for those above the poverty line is decent, when compared to the so-called developed nations. Ok, before someone slaps me, I’d better pinch myself awake from my dream.

The Transparency International Report is out for 2008 and India is ranked among the most corrupt nations in the world. It didn’t surprise me at all. Excerpts from the CNN IBN report:

According to this year’s Transparency International Report, out of 180 countries, India is the 85th most corrupt nation in the world. It’s the same down-hill journey. This time India has tumbled from rank 72 last year to rank 85 this year – mostly thanks to inspired moments like the cash-for-vote scam.

Small mercy is that we are at least better off than Pakistan at 134. China’s integrity index is marginally better than ours as it comes 72nd on the list and Somalia is the worst at 180. Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden are the least corrupt countries.

The dubious distinction of the most corrupt sectors according to Indians goes to the police department closely followed by the political establishment and the lower judicary.

The state-by-state survey by Transparency International India and the Centre for Media Studies, New Delhi places four Indian states in its “Alarmingly Corrupt” category.

Isn’t is strange how the rich keep getting richer and the poor seem forgotten? I think we should hold this dubious distinction high above our heads while we wade through the slush.

    i came across this bit when i was helping write some trivia. but i was glad it was not in the top 10, by the way, i don’t get the numbering of this report.
    isn’t it better to rank the 85th most corrupt than be 72nd most corrupt country?

    @Compulsivewriter
    No, the ranking system in this report goes from 1 to 180, least corrupt to the most corrupt.
    New Zealand is ranked 1, or the most non-corrupt nation, and Somalia is ranked 180, or the most corrupt nation. India was ranked 72 last time, and now, we’ve moved a few steps in the wrong direction… 🙂

    If we think its not too bad then we will end up at 100 position next year!! The government machinery need s to be ashamed of this ranking and should work on reducing it.

    72 to 85 ?? Whoa !!

    @ Reema : Government Machinery should work on “reducing” it ???

    I feel the Indian government is the most corrupt…I’m just generalizing…they add up to most of the shit that goes on…

    For 85 itself there was so much trouble in getting required documents from govt. offices, and if it becomes 180 I can’t imagine what will happen…?

    We people must aware of this and fight against this one….
